DIY Sponge Cake from Cleaning Sponge for Doll House

Today’s DIY project was inspired by my daughter.

She found a melamine cleaning sponge in our craft drawer (you know those magic eraser sponges for cleaning) and said she wanted to make a cake. She tried to paint it with colouring pens but it was very difficult. So she tried acrylic paints.

It came out great and it looked like a yummy fluffy sponge cake!

So I made a few miniature cakes using the leftover melamine cleaning sponge.

Ingredients

For the sponge cake: melamine sponge, acrylic paints

For the frosting: baking soda (2-3 parts), glue (1 part), acrylic paint (1 part)

How to make

  1. Cut melamine sponge into cake shapes. I used a utility knife to cut it. I find it difficult to cut it with scissors.
  2. Paint sponge from step 1. (I painted only the sides of cakes as frosting would cover the top part.)
  3. In a small container, mix baking soda, glue, and acrylic paint. Adjust thickness by adding more baking soda or water to make its thickness similar to whipped cream. Not too runny but not too hard so you can create an illusion of a drip frosting.
  4. Decorate your sponge cake with the frosting.

I always wanted to make miniature cakes. I watched some videos on DIY miniature clay cakes but they looked very complicated with all the tools artists use.

However, with a melamine sponge, all you need to do is to cut and paint. It was easy and fun. My 8-year-old daughter enjoyed it as well.

After we made all the cakes we wanted, there was leftover frosting. In next week’s post, we will show you what you can make with leftover frosting!
